Useful sites
Here are some of the websites I like:
- WordRibbon.Tips.Net – a useful site for getting the most out of Word 2007 (there is a related site for those still on older versions of Word)
- Tech Republic – lots of useful hints on working with Word (particularly useful for anyone making the change to Word 2007).
- Dropbox – a useful site for backing up or sharing files (particularly useful for sharing files that are too big to send by email).
- Grammar Girl – short, friendly tips for improving writing; covers grammar rules and English usage.
- The Purdue Online Writing Lab – free writing resources and instructional material; includes a grammar blog.
- Bullfighter – free software that works with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to help identify and eliminate jargon.
Speeding up onscreen editing
Mainly through discussions on LinkedIn, I have discovered a host of useful editing tools:
- Perfect It – a fantastic program that scans a document and picks up inconsistencies in spelling, hyphenation, use of abbreviations, etc.
- The Editor’s Toolkit– a set of shortcuts for editing in MS Word.
- Edit Tools – a program for setting up style sheets, and checking the spelling of organisms, journal names, etc.
