About me

My background

I am a highly experienced science editor, having worked for almost 10 years for Biotext (a science information consultancy), and for 2 years in my own editing business. I have a strong background in science, with a PhD in biochemistry and 20 years experience as a scientist. My science career included working in medical laboratories in Paris and Scotland, and lecturing at the University of Harare in Zimbabwe. In 1999, I completed a masters in science communication, as part of a career change to becoming a science editor. In 2009, I became a freelancer and set up Cadman Editing Services.

Qualifications

I am accredited as a technical editor with the Australian Institute of Professional Editors, the World Health Organization and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. I am also certified by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS) in the United States, and have submitted a portfolio for BELS Diplomate status.

Recent projects

My experience in research and lecturing, and my skills in revising turgid prose, have enabled me to deliver high-quality science writing and editing to many clients. Projects I am currently working on include:

  • a set of six clinical practice guidelines on patient blood management
  • reports on health and ageing, the blood cold chain (temperature controlled supply chain) and nutrition for the World Health Organization
  • scientific papers for the Bulletin of the World Health Organization
  • training courses in science writing and editing.

I have also been writing a series of articles about onscreen editing for the Canberra Society of Editors.
