Fields in MS Word

Have you made changes to a Word document – perhaps to page numbers or to references – and then found that your changes mysteriously disappear? This can happen if you make changes to fields in MS Word, which are code rather than text. Watch the video to understand what fields are, and how you can easily add, update and view them.

The video shows Word 2016. If you’re using another PC version of Word (10, 13 or 19), the steps will be similar, but for Mac users, the way to view fields is different, just follow these steps:

Word > preferences > view > show > field shading [deselect ‘field’] > [select drop-down ‘field shading > ‘always’]
